PONTA DELGADA: A BEAUTY
paradise in atlantic
Ponta Delgada district extends from the center to the west of the island of São Miguel and hides some of the most impressive wonders of Azores. Incredible viewpoints, thermal waters in the ocean, volcanic caldeiras full of colorful lagoons, beautiful coast towns and elegant lighthouses are some of the points of interest that await us in the municipality of Ponta Delgada. The city of Ponta Delgada, have a special island character, although the Portuguese heritage is on every corner.
If you have time to enjoy the island of São Miguel, you can spend an entire morning visiting the capital. It is a small town so almost everything can be visited on foot. Parking is paid on many streets, so it is best to leave your car at the hotel and explore. Some interesting places to visit in the historic center of Ponta Delgada are: Fort of São Brás, Portas da Cidade, Passeio Marítimo, Church of San Sebastián, Mercado da Graça, Praça do Município and José do Canto Garden.
Portas da Cidade are considered a business card of the city of Ponta Delgada, on São Miguel Island. An architectural landmark in the heart of the city, in the parish of São Sebastião. Composed of three arches, where - in the middle - is the coat of arms of the royal arms and the city. Initially, in the 18th century (1783) they were located on the extinct quay. Later, in 1952, they were transferred to Praça Gonçalo Velho Cabral where they remain to date, after the works carried out on Av. Infante Dom Henrique - also known as Avenida Marginal de Ponta Delgada. This monument - an authentic postcard from Ponta Delgada - has been classified as a Property of Public Interest since 1953. Enjoy the area around the city gates where you will find traditional shops, several banks as well as souvenir shops and souvenirs from the Azores.
Did you know that Jacinto Leite was responsible for bringing tea seeds to the Azores from Brazil, and started tea culture around 1820. With the plague that hit the large orange plantations on São Miguel Island, tea was one of the outlets that farmers and entrepreneurs have found to thrive on the land of São Miguel. Only the oldest and the only tea plantation in Europe remains - Gorreana, which has its own electric power generator powered by a watercourse, which is why it was the only one of the various tea plantations that persisted.
When visiting the so-called “Ilha Verde”, it is mandatory to pass through some of the biggest attractions, among them the various viewpoints with breathtaking views over the lagoons, especially the "Vista do rei" viewpoint with a view over the "Caldeira das Sete Cidades" and, in particular, over the natural lakes with blue and green waters such as the "Lagoa das Sete Cidades", undoubtedly one of the most sublime places on the island. For nature lovers, the "Terra Nostra Park" and the warm water pools is an idyllic place to enjoy, as well as the old boiler and the "Poças da D. Beija". Cities such as the Monasteries where there are natural pools, Vila Franca do Campo which can also visit the Ilhéu de Vila Franca and the island's capital, Ponta Delgada, which offers between typical streets and magnificent churches, is one of the mandatory places to pass.
